Volunteer Program at Highpoint Health – Sumner
Persons wanting to use their skills to make a difference in others’ lives are invited to join Friends of Highpoint Health – Sumner. Volunteers are valued and respected as part of the healing team.
Friends of Highpoint Health – Sumner is a nonprofit 501c3 charitable organization composed of approximately 100 community volunteers who serve in the medical center and assist with fundraising for mission-related projects. Funds raised by volunteers benefit the patient and community projects including: Food Pantry, Clothes Closet, Sleepsacks for Newborns, Gas Vouchers for Wound Care, Radiation Oncology and Outpatient Therapy patients, and Cancer Support Groups, as well as medical scholarships for students attending Volunteer State Community College, Union University, and Welch College.
Mission
The mission of Friends of Highpoint Health – Sumner is to meet healthcare needs through (1) assistance to patients and families, (2) involvement in community health initiatives, and (3) provision for medical education.

How to Become a Volunteer

- Once your application is approved, you will be contacted to come in for an interview with the Volunteer Coordinator.
- After your interview, you must consent to a background check, drug screening, and Tuberculosis Skin Test.
- Once your background check has been approved, you will be contacted to schedule a Drug Screen and TB Test.
- With the approval of Drug Screening and TB from Employee Health, you will be contacted to schedule Orientation (which includes complying with hospital regulations, policies and procedures).
- During Orientation, opportunities are discussed, assignment selected, uniforms disbursed, and an Identification Badge is made.
- Annually, you are required to complete an updated Information Sheet and attend Mandatory Orientation (which includes complying with hospital regulations, policies and procedures), in which a record is kept in your file.
Volunteer Program at Highpoint Health – Riverview
Volunteers provide needed services at Highpoint Health – Riverview by assisting with office work, visiting patients and their families, hosting in the Front Lobby, and helping with fundraising events.
We are always on the lookout for people who want to give their time and talents to a good cause! Are you interested in making new friends, helping others, broadening your skills and knowledge, and making a difference?
Volunteering offers a vast array of benefits. Lasting friendships are formed. Patients and visitors are provided services that are above and beyond the normal healthcare setting. Knowledge is gained about the medical field and new skills are developed such as computer skills, clerical skills and people skills. Many volunteers come to work at Highpoint Health – Riverview to give back to the community.
Frequently Asked Questions
- How much time would I have to give?
Most volunteers work one 4 to 6-hour shift each week. Some give more, some give less. Schedules are arranged to suit your availability.
- What do volunteers wear?
Closed, comfortable shoes, such as tennis shoes, are recommended. Volunteers are provided a smock to wear while working.
- Where do volunteers work?
Medical Center Lobby
Volunteers direct patients and visitors to destinations within the medical center; deliver flowers, mail and newspapers; and provide needed assistance with wheelchairs.Chaplain Services
